Hunters bagged a total of 141 bobcats during the state's first bobcat hunt since the 1970s, a 2 1/2-month season ending Jan. 31 that saw only 500 permits issued for the elusive predators that were once on the state's threatened species list. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources reported Friday that 69 bobcats were taken by hunting, 49 by trapping, 12 by archery, and 11 were salvaged from roads. Bobcats were harvested in 44 counties in the zones open for bobcat season, with the top counties being Pike (11), Jackson (10), Jefferson (7), and six each from Carroll and Randolph Counties. In central Illinois, there were three bobcats taken in Cass County, two in Greene and three in Scott County.
“We are very pleased with the response to Illinois’ new hunting and trapping season for bobcats,” IDNR Director Wayne Rosenthal said. “The recovery of the bobcat is a conservation success story in Illinois. We were pleased with the response of hunters and trappers that applied for permits, and we will continue to evaluate the program.” The Illinois bobcat hunting season ran from Nov. 10 through Jan. 31, except during firearm deer hunting season Nov. 18–20 and Dec.

Bobcat hunting is prohibited in the roughly one-fourth of the state that includes Chicago, Joliet, Kankakee, Pontiac, Champaign-Urbana and Danville. Abundance of applicants Five hundred Illinois residents were chosen by lottery from among 6,416 applicants to receive a state bobcat hunting permit. Those awarded a permit were required to register their harvest within 48 hours and purchase a Bobcat Pelt Temporary Permit. The hunting season was made possible by legislation passed by the General Assembly and signed by Gov.
Bruce Rauner. Most Illinois hunters who tried to obtain a bobcat permit were unsuccessful. Ben Plattner, a sportsman from the Springfield area, and his 13-year-old son Will couldn't get a permit in their home state, so they went instead to northern Minnesota, where Will harvested a large, 42-pound bobcat. Ben Plattner suggested that IDNR look at an alternate way of allotting permits. The IDNR should use 'a quota system where anyone legally licensed can purchase a permit to hunt bobcats.
Hunters have to call in the evening before the day that they hunt to see if the quota was filled in that particular area,' Ben Plattner said. “This will not only give the IDNR a more accurate harvest report, but increase the revenue for Illinois.

Otherwise you may have a hard time locating a successful Illinois bobcat hunter.” Activists tried for permits Illinois' bobcat hunt received attention last year when a number of activists applied for bobcat permits to keep hunters from getting them. Jennifer Kuroda of Rockford is with the Illinois Bobcat Foundation and said despite their efforts, less than 3 percent of the permits went to non-hunters. “We disagreed with the hunt in the first place. We feel there needs to be more science behind the hunting and trapping itself,” Kuroda said. “Our goal is to hopefully partner with IDNR to help ensure that there is enough evidence and research behind the abundance of bobcats in this state.
There is a lot of information that we would like from IDNR that we don't have.” “Our goal is to make sure that we don't put bobcats in the same threatened position that they were 40 years ago,” Kuroda said. Most Illinois residents have not seen a bobcat in the wild, but there are places they can go to get a close-up look at the animals. Springfield's Henson Robinson Zoo has two 25-pound bobcats, the nearly 10-year-old sisters Natasha and Nichole, that can be seen when the zoo re-opens for the season on March 18. “Someone had taken them out of the wild as kittens when their eyes were still shut,” said interim zoo director Marikay Altes. “We don't know if something happened to mom or if someone did a bad thing, but we collected them anyway because they couldn't be returned to the wild.” “It's interesting just the size difference compared to a house cat, and they've got a pretty unique facial hair pattern,” Altes said. “They are pretty typical cats so they sleep most of the day, especially in the afternoons when it's hot during the summer. They can be quite lazy and fairly secretive, so you don't see them out often from under their shelter.” The Henson Robinson Zoo bobcat sisters eat a specially made combination of meat products, vitamins and minerals that mimics the nutrition that they would receive hunting prey in the wild, Altes said, who added that despite all of the attention regarding the recent bobcat hunt, it has been “business as usual” regarding the zoo's bobcats.
