The ImageMixer 3 software that came with my won't work on my version of OS X, which is version 10.4. Hitachi Imagemixer 3 For Macbook Pro
I just got off the phone with Canon support. I have a Canon HF 100 and was experiencing the same problems. If you have the newest version of iMovie (in iMovie '08.but I would bet '09 would work fine as well.' 06 is questionable), you shouldn't have any trouble getting the files off your camera onto your Mac. Plug in the camera and turn the power on (or plug in the memory card via a card reader) 2.
Open iMovie 3. Wait a few seconds to see if your camera connection automatically opens, if it doesn't, click on the image of the camera on the far left side of the middle bar in iMovie.
It should recognize the video information you have plugged in at this point. If it doesn't, in the bottom of the import window, see if you can select a camera from the drop down list next to where it says 'camera' in the bottom left. I was told by the tech support people that I need to update my Final Cut Express software in order to read the video files, however I think they're wrong because I'm pretty sure I have the newest version. I also just found this information on Apple's website useful (see the video entitled 'Built in AVCHD'): If you're using Final Cut Express 4, go to File - Log & Transfer (or hit SHIFT + COMMAND + 8 on your keyboard) and if your camera/memory stick is plugged in, it should show a list of your files right there.
Much better than iMovie. Here is some information on the stuff I am using if it's useful: iMovie '08 version 7.1.4 Final Cut Express 4 version 4.0.1 Canon HF 100 Digital HD Camcorder Mac OS X Leopard Version 10.5.6 Hope this is helpful. I doubt that I will check back to this forum, so please email any questions you might have (I may or may not be able to answer) to bbaumgar@ucsd.edu. I would recommend, assuming you have a Mac, going out and buying iMovie '09 ($39 - $79 depending where you buy it), Final Cut Express ($100 - $300 depending where you buy it), or Final Cut Studio 2 ($400 - $1200 depending where you buy it) before spending money on another software that won't let you do as much. The Imagemixer 3 software that your camera came with is supposed to let you basically do the same things, but doesn't work on Mac. It looks like you can buy the Mac version from Pixela.but I would encourage you to contact Canon or Pixela support first and demand a free one, since you paid so much for the camcorder and should be entitled to the software. Canon tech support was pretty useful as well: 1-800-828-4040.
